VIEWPOINT | Freedom is the answer

I’ve known Dr. Patti Giebink for over 30 years. She delivered our eldest daughter. She is a fine doctor and a lifetime friend. She fervently believes that the instant a woman’s egg is fertilized that single cell should possess the legally enforceable right to put a doctor in jail and force a woman to give birth, no exceptions even for rape or incest. That is her right and I respect that, but I disagree.  

There are many South Dakotans who agree with this extreme right to life, anti-abortion position. Perhaps as many as 30 percent, according to recent polls. They have every right to choose against abortion in their own personal lives. They have every right to counsel their loved ones and their friends not to choose abortion no matter what. They even have the right to call those who believe they are wrong “baby killers” and to pen articles by doctors that are filled with falsehoods about what we believe and what our Freedom Amendment G would do.
