Winter brought higher number of injuries than usual
Ice, heavy snows took a toll on more than the roads in the Sioux Falls area
The long winter of 2022-2023 offered fewer days than a normal winter to spend time outside running.
So in December, when a relatively warm, sunny day beckoned, former South Dakota State University runner Sam Trebilcock decided to head for the bike trail to get one in. Before he got there, he slipped on ice, landing on his back and shoulder.
Trebilcock, a planner with the city of Sioux Falls, wasn’t alone.

Health providers say the winter brought an increase in injuries. As the final evidence of the long winter melts away under a sudden turn to spring, some of those who were injured still have the aches, pains, bruises and scars they sustained.
