COUNTERPOINT | Thoughtful, lawful protections needed to guard children on the internet
Guest column by Sen. Helene Duhamel
A committee of South Dakota legislators is underway to address concerns about the use of artificial intelligence and our children’s safety on the internet. As chairman of the subcommittee on protecting kids from harmful content, I am part of the effort searching for sensible, enforceable and constitutional solutions to protect minors from accessing harmful material.
The entire committee is now considering potential legislation including three drafts provided by the Attorney General’s Office. They include app store and device based age verification and parental protections for children under the age of 18. If the committee supports this direction, South Dakota would potentially be the first state in the nation to offer these child protections.
