VIEWPOINT | Rural South Dakotans deserve quality physicians

America’s senior population is predicted to nearly double by 2050. To meet the needs of this growing population, our leaders must ensure the stability and security of the Medicare program. Yet, the current doctor shortage, which is being exacerbated by Medicare cuts, is making it increasingly harder for patients to access care.
Over half of all South Dakotans live in a rurally designated area and almost one-fifth of the state’s population is enrolled in Medicare. As of 2025, fifty-three out of sixty-six counties in South Dakota are designated as Health Professional Shortage Areas, meaning there are at least 3,500 patients per one provider. If you are struggling to find a doctor, let alone one who is available to see you, chances are you live in one of these areas.
