Trump shot, South Dakota officials respond
Former president rushed off Pennsylvania stage with apparent injury
Donald Trump was injured in a shooting at a campaign rally Saturday.
According to multiple news sources, the former president and the presumptive GOP presidential nominee was rushed off stage after gunshots rang out during the Butler, Pennsylvania, event. Photographs circulating online show Trump bleeding from his ear with blood smeared on his face.
News sources are reporting the suspected assailant is dead.
NBC News is reporting that Trump is currently safe and is expected to survive, citing two law enforcement officials with knowledge of the situation.
"President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act. He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility. More details will follow," according to a statement attributed to a Trump spokesperson by the New York Times.
Shortly after news of the apparent shooting occurred, politicians, elected officials, and pundits began making social media posts in support of the 78-year-old who served in the White House from 2017 to 2021.
In an interview with The Dakota Scout Saturday, Rep. Dusty Johnson called for introspection because some are “comfortable with political violence.”
“Obviously it gets hard to comprehend a presidential assassination attempt and watching the footage,” Johnson said. “It’s a sad day for America.”
On X, Gov. Kristi Noem wrote: “Pray for Donald J. Trump. Pray for the United States of America,” she said. “He’s the toughest man I’ve ever met. Nobody’s been through what he’s been through. May swift justice be brought against his evil attacker.”
Echoing those remarks, Congressman Dusty Johnson and Sens. Mike Rounds and John Thune also acknowledged the nearly tragic event.
“Kimberley and I are praying for the safety of President Trump and everyone who attended the rally in Pennsylvania, and I’m carefully monitoring the situation,” Thune wrote on X.
“Anyone involved in this attack must be held accountable,” Rounds also posted to the website.

Oh clutch my pearls. Rep Johnson, this nation was built on political violence. Get a grip on reality. Begin by reading, The Barbarous Years: The Peopling of British North America--The Conflict of Civilizations, 1600-1675. And Governor, bonespurs trump is anything but 'tough'. He "suffered" a scratch. Former President Theodore was shot in the chest, then calmed the crowd that likely would have lynched the attempted assassin, and continued giving his campaign speech. Roosevelt began in part, "Friends, I shall ask you to be as quiet as possible. I don't know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot—but it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose."
A heinous act which likely will have an effect on the POTUS race.
