Term-limited city councilor wants to make jump to Sioux Falls School Board
Pat Starr announces candidacy in April board of education election
An outgoing Sioux Falls city councilor wants a spot on the board of education in South Dakota’s largest school district.
Northeast District Councilor Pat Starr announced his candidacy Wednesday in the upcoming Sioux Falls School Board election.
Term-limited from City Council and unable to seek re-election following the end of his term in May, Starr hopes to continue serving in elected office. In a campaign announcement provided to The Dakota Scout, he said he is not ready to stop in his role as a public advocate.

"I am proud of my service on the Sioux Falls City Council. I have a consistent voting record of never voting for a tax increase in almost eight years,” he said. “I have been a voice for those in the community who haven't had a voice. I plan to take that record with me to the Sioux Falls School Board."
In the upcoming school board election, to be held April 9, two of the body’s five spots will be up for grabs. Incumbent board member Marc Murren has also filed his candidacy in hopes of securing re-election, while longtime board member Kate Serenbetz has opted not to pursue another term.
Retired educator Gail Swenson is also a candidate in the race.
