Federal spending cuts force state agencies to cancel grant awards, reduce budgets
More than 100 federal funding streams into South Dakota have been canceled as part of President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency campaign.
And it’s anticipated that more fallout from the flurry of spending cuts is still ahead.
State finance records show federal spending cuts implemented by the White House in recent months have resulted in more than $9 million worth of reductions in the state’s previously anticipated federal revenues and grants facilitated by a state agency.
Compiled by the Bureau of Finance and Management (BFM), an account of federal spending cuts listed in a spreadsheet obtained by The Dakota Scout dated April 7, 2025, shows those cuts are spread across three state agencies and dozens of nonprofits, education organizations, and state vendors.
