Tougher penalties for unlawful gatherings on public roads, excessive exhibition driving cruises to passage in Legislature
Felony arrests — and potentially vehicle seizures — could soon be the punishment in South Dakota for illegal street racing.
A measure aimed at cracking down on organized, unsanctioned racing events and excessive exhibition driving on public roads has cleared both the state Senate and House of Representatives, with the latter on Friday approving Senate Bill 116.
The legislation comes in response to a growing prevalence of illegal “street takeovers” in which large groups of car enthusiasts and spectators convene in gatherings where illegal street racing and vehicle stunts occur — particularly in Sioux Falls.
