South Dakota lawmakers want looser reins on horse dentistry
Deregulation push gets through state House
PIERRE — The South Dakota House of Representatives wants dental work on horses to be a gallop, not a grind.
The chamber voted 39-28 to advance freshman lawmaker Jana Hunt’s House Bill 1176, which would declassify certain dental procedures as “veterinary medicine” to enable non veterinary professionals to perform basic mouth-related equestrian healthcare.
The Ziebach County Republican’s bill has drawn much attention and friendly banter because of its unique subject matter, one that many Pierre policymakers say they’ve never encountered before the bill had its first committee hearing Thursday.
