South Dakota adding civics requirement in public universities
Board of Regents agrees to add course on government, political science and history
Undergraduate students in South Dakota’s public universities will be required to fulfill a civics requirement as part of their core graduation requirements, the South Dakota Board of Regents has decided.
The decision is in deference to the wishes of some South Dakota lawmakers and others in academia who contend that college graduates are not learning enough about the country’s political system or the U.S. Constitution.
The requirement will be integrated into the general education programming block. It will be designed to “prepare students for a life of active and informed participation” through subjects in government, history and political science.
