Sioux Falls to use $5.8M, private partners to address 'extremely low-income' housing shortage
Housing assessment shows South Dakota's largest city needs 3,650 studio and one-bedroom units for low-income earners by 2028
Sioux Falls' deepest housing need is single-bedroom or studio apartments folks making about $23,000 or less a year.
That’s according to the latest city-wide housing needs assessment conducted by Augustana Research Institute (ARI), which in 2023 found the largest affordability gap in Sioux Falls is for households at or below 30 to 40 percent of the average median income for the metro area, particularly small residential units.
And those findings are being used to support the rollout of a $5.84 million affordable housing program unveiled this week by City Hall.
The Sioux Falls Planning and Development Services Department Thursday morning opened a request for proposals seeking potential partners interested in developing projects that address housing availability and affordability for extremely low-income households.
