State's attorney, police exploring how other communities have addressed issue
Officials in Sioux Falls might be looking to state lawmakers next year for help in curbing excessive speeding and street racing.
Police Chief Jon Thum Thursday held a press conference to address street racing in the city, saying officials are looking at possible legislative remedies to increase penalties for those caught racing. “We want people to know this is a dangerous activity,” he said.
Thum spoke with reporters a day after a motorcyclist died while racing another motorcycle on North Sycamore Avenue near East Benson Road. Lt. Andrew Siebenborn said Anatoliy Manuylo, 35, died after striking a parked vehicle while traveling at speeds in excess of 100 mph. The crash was witnessed by a group of people who apparently gathered for street racing in the area early Wednesday morning.
