Police Chief says parole absconder pulled weapon as Violent Crimes Unit attempted to make arrest

A Sioux Falls police officer was shot Tuesday by a parole absconder, marking the first time in decades that a city law enforcement officer has been struck by gunfire in the line of duty.
Sioux Falls Police Chief Jon Thum, during an evening news conference, confirmed that a member of the department’s Violent Crimes Unit was wounded while attempting to apprehend a parole absconder near 12th Street and Elmwood Avenue. The officer, whose name has not been released, sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the shooting and was transported to a hospital.
