Sioux Falls Council greenlights big truck parking ban downtown
New rules for Phillips Avenue will take affect May 1, criticized as sending 'elitist' message to public
Parking some large trucks and vans along portions of downtown Sioux Falls’ main commercial strip will be a finable offense next spring.
The Sioux Falls City Council on Tuesday voted 7-1 to adopt a new ordinance mandating drivers leave at least 10 feet of clearance between their vehicles and the center line of the roadway when parking on Phillips Avenue between Ninth and 13th Streets.
“We certainly want everyone to come down and enjoy our wonderful downtown, but it’s a safety issue and we don’t want trucks and very large vehicles obstructing our drivers,” Councilor Jen Sigette reiterated Tuesday night.
