Shipping containers under microscope in South Dakota
Pierre becomes latest city to target trend with new regulations
PIERRE — South Dakota's Capital City is the latest to crack down on shipping containers being used in residential neighborhoods.
And the clock is ticking for Pierre property owners with a shipping container to get them out of town or apply for a special permit in hopes of keeping them for at least another six months.
That’s after the Pierre City Commission this week voted to prevent the permanent placement of industrial shipping containers on residential properties, in response to an uptick in residents using the units for storage needs.
“These containers are starting to pop up in residential areas, as well as commercial and industrial parts of the community,” Pierre Mayor Steve Harding said. “We thought it important to set up parameters so the public is aware of how they could be used in the community.”
