Sheriff Milstead: Stepped-up illegal immigration enforcement is in action
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents are making arrests, preparing for deportations
The Minnehaha County Jail is ground zero in the Sioux Falls area for an increase in detainees who are in the country illegally.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, six people in the jail were brought in, with Immigration and Customs Enforcement placing detainers on them, Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead told The Dakota Scout.” That activity over the last four years hasn’t been as common.
“I will say, that it was more rare than it is now,” Milstead said of past apprehensions.
The detainers are requests by ICE to hold a person for potential immigrations proceedings, including deportation. The county is reimbursed for its costs to house ICE detainees.
