It took 20 years, but the final segment of a bike trail in Dell Rapids is expected to be completed this summer. The 5-mile Sioux River Red Rock Trail was an idea hatched in 2005 by two local women, Linsey Duffy and Jill Schumaker, who spoke about the need for a trail while their children played. Local residents had already expressed a desire for a recreation trail at a town hall meeting.
And why not? Dell Rapids has scenic rock outcroppings – the high school’s mascot is the Quarriers – that accentuate the Big Sioux River and South Dakota prairie. Wildlife sightings are common on the trail.
