SCOUTING YESTERDAY | Construction bookends Dakota Territory College boom
This week in South Dakota history: Nov. 15-21
South Dakota State University was enjoying the completion of several major construction projects as the Brookings school also planned for the opening of a new gymnasium and drill hall 125 years ago this week, according to an article published by the Brookings Register in 1899.
Founded by the territorial Legislature in 1881, the Agricultural College of the Dakota Territory — later renamed South Dakota State College and eventually South Dakota State University — opened in the fall of 1884. Among the school’s first milestones was the completion of its first building, Old Central, which stood until 1962.
