SCOUTING REPORT | Geese hazards, social media spouting, aging well, dodging responsibility

A goose dinner has been a traditional feature of Christmas supper in the Midwest. This correspondent respects that tradition, and wishes he had a 12-gauge shotgun and legal permission to engage said birds this month as wave after wave of Canadian geese took flight from the Big Sioux River. The interaction took place while delivering our print edition of The Dakota Scout to Granite City Food & Brewery, a restaurant of outstanding food and craft beer.
Shortly after that encounter, the city of Sioux Falls issued a warning about the geese – which again, are good food sources when properly prepared (See the 2013 cookbook “Duck, Duck, Goose: The Ultimate Guide to Cooking Waterfowl, Both Farmed and Wild.”)
The proliferation of Canadian geese has created a safety hazard for the Sioux Falls Regional Airport. As it turns out, jet plains traveling at hundreds of miles an hour might not interact well with 15-pound winged butterballs. Who could have imagined?
