Legendary Hollywood Producer Samuel Goldwyn is credited with the phrase “Messages, from Western Union you get messages, from me you get pictures,” when pitched a story with a great “social message” included. Since that time writers and directors have labored to put their personal messages into film and TV productions. Recently the Directors Guild of America’s LGBTQ+ Committee hosted a celebration of storytellers. One participating director was quoted “The cool thing about directing is it’s about making up your own rules and that’s how I feel in this age of the industry. I’m not pleased with the way things are done and I don’t think anyone is, and there’s this excitement of saying, how do I shift this to fit my point-of-view?” Another stated, “Whatever we have been doing is somewhat successful, keep pushing and pushing…” A third stressed the importance of moving LBGTQ+ stories from the sideline to the mainstream. And you wonder why there are battles at school boards over appropriate books for elementary students.
CBS has given a straight-to-series (meaning, no pilot episode) order for a new drama titled Watson and starring Morris Chestnut. A contemporary story set one year after Sherlock Holmes’ death at the hands of Moriarty, Watson returns to his career as head of a clinic treating rare disorders but his old life intrudes.
