Sanford, former high school athlete settle malpractice lawsuit over stroke
Teen showed symptoms of impending stroke, but waited days for treatment
A former high school athlete from Remsen, Iowa, who suffered a stroke while in the care of Sanford Health has settled a medical malpractice suit against the hospital and its providers.
Kamden Steffen had been a three-sport athlete and the leading scorer on his basketball team as a sophomore. During a football game in his junior year — September, 2021 — Steffen was hit by another player, causing a fracture to his right collarbone.
Following the injury, Steffen reported headaches on the left side of his head, visual sensitivity and nausea, according to his lawsuit. He received medication for migraine headaches.
On Nov. 5, Steffen sought emergency care after weakness and numbness on his left side caused him to fall. An MRI showed parts of his brain were not getting sufficient blood and oxygen.
