Relief for South Dakota homeowners could come with sales tax increase
East and West River lawmakers lay out proposal as property taxes continue to rise across state
A pair of Republican lawmakers from both sides of South Dakota will offer a sweeping property tax reform package for South Dakota homeowners in the upcoming legislative session.
Rep. Tony Venuhuizen says the plan that he and Spearfish Sen. Randy Deibert are proposing would be a tax reduction for South Dakota homeowners, but it would hinge on raising the state sales tax. The District 13 representative said homeowners are demanding property tax relief, as housing values and property tax assessments soar.
“It’s the number one issue I hear about in my district from my constituents,” he said. “It’s not even close.”
