President Donald Trump expected to nominate candidate for premier legal position for first time in years
South Dakota hasn’t had a U.S. attorney appointed by a president and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in nearly seven years.
But with President-elect Donald Trump expected to return to the White House with a flurry of nominations, that could change. The current U.S. attorney for South Dakota – Alison Ramsdell – was sworn into the office by U.S. District Judge Roberto Lange in 2022.
Lange, as the chief judge in the district, had the ability to install her on an interim basis to oversee the office. Because she was never nominated by the president or confirmed by the Senate, she would have had to make way had the Biden administration nominated someone to fill the vacancy. No nomination was ever made by the administration.
