Public scandal molds attorney general's priorities for South Dakota Legislature
Jackley also targets human trafficking, violent offenders
PIERRE — Government corruption and accountability will be the theme of South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley’s wishlist for South Dakota’s 100th Legislative Session.
The state’s top prosecutor and lawman on Tuesday unveiled four areas of law he hopes lawmakers will focus on when they convene next week for the nine-week legislative session, unveiling several bills around human trafficking, corrections, and criminal justice.
But the bulk of his legislative priorities for 2025 target public corruption and accountability, a result of months of high-profile scandals involving public officials and state employees — specifically protecting whistleblowers who report suspected malfeasance in government, making it law that violations be reported, and two measures aimed at bolstering third-party oversight of state spending.
