South Dakota's indigenous heritage celebrated in downtown Sioux Falls
While the rest of the country had continued to refer to the first holiday after Labor Day as Columbus Day, South Dakota has officially called the second Monday in October Native American Day since 1990.
And the holiday, designated to honor the culture and heritage of South Dakota’s largest minority population, brought thousands to downtown Sioux Falls Monday to this year’s Native American Day Parade.
It’s just the fifth-ever Native American Day Parade in Sioux Falls, which began in 2018 with the intention of being annual. However, organizers opted not to hold the gathering in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
