Noem trending toward quick confirmation as Republican support builds
South Dakota governor’s nomination to head Department of Homeland Security has backing from key allies
Gov. Kristi Noem’s potential move to Washington, D.C. as Homeland Security secretary is gaining momentum and could lead to her leaving the state capital city sooner, with endorsements from prominent figures and organizations pressing for her swift confirmation.
Tom Homan, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to serve as the administration’s “border czar,” has praised Noem for her grasp of border security issues and urged the Senate to expedite her confirmation.
“I briefed her on many of my plans and my thoughts,” Homan told the New York Post. While he declined to elaborate on their discussions, he emphasized Noem’s readiness for the role. “She asked very, very detailed questions, so she understands it,” Homan said.
Law enforcement organizations, most notably the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), have echoed Homan’s sentiments, calling for the Senate to act quickly in confirming Noem to lead the Department of Homeland Security. The pressure to expedite Noem’s nomination reflects her potential importance to Trump’s second-term priorities, particularly his pledge to tackle immigration on “day one” of his presidency.
