PIERRE — The governor didn’t pass the baton to Lt. Gov. Larry Rhoden; she passed a baseball bat.
The kickoff of the 100th annual state legislative session doubled as a send off for Gov. Kristi Noem as she prepares to address a U.S. Senate committee in less than 24 hours.
After weaving through a list of her 10 favorite things about South Dakota and the ways that she has worked to improve them, Noem delivered an extensive tribute to her family before promising to continue to make residents “safer, stronger, and freer” in her next job as Department of Homeland Security secretary. She did acknowledge that she must be confirmed by the Senate before she can take the position.
