No tax cut? Optimism waning that a deal can be reached

PIERRE — South Dakotans might not get any tax cut after all.

Legislators have killed Gov. Kristi Noem’s food tax cut proposal, a property tax cut and a property tax rebate package, opting instead to move ahead with a rollback of the state sales tax rate.

But ongoing gridlock in the South Dakota Legislature heading into the final day of this year’s lawmaking session is eroding optimism that any tax cut deal can be reached.

“There’s a high potential that there is no tax cut,” said Sen. Ryan Maher, a lead negotiator in budget talks between the Senate and House.
