Minnehaha County residents could pay more to drive
County Commission will be asked to raise wheel tax for first time in 30 years
Minnehaha County’s highway superintendent pitched an increase in the amount of money the county charges for vehicles Tuesday, telling commissioners a formal request would come sometime this year.
Perhaps as early as June 1, although Superintendent Jacob Maras conceded that a mid-year increase would mean that some residents who already registered their vehicles wouldn’t pay the increase while others would.
State law allows counties to charge a wheel tax. Minnehaha County currently charges each vehicle registered in the county at $4 a wheel, with a maximum of $16 per vehicle.
