Minnehaha County commissioners drop idea for vote on change in government
Home rule idea would have eliminated three elected positions
The Minnehaha County Commission will not bring a ballot measure to restructure county government following public push back and concerns about the timeline for making changes.
The commission was contemplating an Aug. 6 hearing to approve a ballot measure allowing voters to weigh in on adopting a home rule charter. Under that form of government, the offices of treasurer, auditor and register of deeds – currently elected positions – would have been eliminated. A county administrator would have been responsible for the day-to-day functions of the government.
During the Aug. 6 hearing, the commission could have voted to put the measure on the November ballot.
