Mayor TenHaken won’t oppose sending Riverline District to ballot
Sioux Falls councilors also voice support for public vote on plan to relocate convention center
Mayor Paul TenHaken supports a public vote on the proposed Riverline District.
But any ballot question about spending hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to redevelop about eight acres of land east of downtown Sioux Falls is likely still months — or even years — away.
The second-term mayor said in a statement provided to The Dakota Scout that the magnitude of relocating city-owned convention facilities and repurposing the existing Sioux Falls Convention Center, along with associated costs, necessitates an election to decide whether the city should invest potentially $200 million or more to bring the idea to fruition.
