Legislature rejects bills to raise marriage, gambling age
Current law allows people as young as 16 to marry with permission of a parent
PIERRE – South Dakota doesn’t like getting pushed around, and it doesn’t want to infantilize adults, or those who are close to being adults.
That was the theme behind two bills debated in the state Senate on Tuesday. Both addressed the age of adulthood – 18.
In one instance, a bill would have moved the age of legal marriage up to 18. In the other, a bill would have moved the legal age to buy a lottery ticket from 18 to 21.
Both failed.
