Lead water pipes in crosshairs as Sioux Falls works to appease Environment Protection Agency
City Hall prepares to contact property owners with structures built before late 1980s
The hunt for lead water pipes in Sioux Falls is on.
Homeowners and businesses with houses and buildings constructed before 1987 can soon expect to hear from Sioux Falls City Hall as its Water Purification division looks to locate all remaining lead piping still existing along the city water network.
The Public Works Department on Friday announced that property owners whose structures are older than the federal government’s ban on lead pipes — Congress prohibited the material in building and infrastructure in 1986 — will be receiving letters requesting information to help City Hall assess if lead is present at their homes, offices, and shops.
