Lawmakers could spend summer looking at prisons, porn, taxes
No shortage of pressing concerns for South Dakota legislators
South Dakota state lawmakers want studies on prison funding and design, property taxes, and their role in regulating artificial intelligence (AI).
Those are just a few of the ideas that lawmakers came up with in a document obtained by The Dakota Scout given to Pierre policymakers to consider for summer studies. From this list, legislators are asked to rank their favorites in order from most preferred to least. Those choices are given to the Executive Board committee, which makes the final decision.

Typically, the Legislature takes up about two or three summer studies each year. The studies typically result in bill proposals in the following legislative session.
With one study proposed by Senate President Pro Tempore Lee Schoenbeck all but locked in, the remaining ideas will be vying for just one or two spots.
Legislative leadership has suggested that given the similarities between some topics, it’s possible that multiple ideas could be combined into one summer study.
The Executive Board will meet on Veto Day Tuesday to make the final decision on which summer studies to take up.
