Johnson: Debt ceiling deal must limit government spending
South Dakota Republican thinks negotiations with White House will yield deal
South Dakota Congressman Dusty Johnson said Friday he’s optimistic a deal will be reached to the raise nation’s debt ceiling.
Johnson spoke to The Dakota Scout shortly after Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen earlier in the day revised a deadline to reach an agreement from June 1 to June 5, predicting the Treasury won’t have the money to pay all of the country’s obligations. The new date gives negotiators in Washington more time to craft a deal.
House Republicans in April passed a bill to raise the debt ceiling, but that measure was also tied to spending cuts. The Biden administration and Democrats in the Senate had insisted that the debt ceiling be raised without spending cuts.
