John G. Sorensen, age 76, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Thursday, April 17, 2025, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with Reverend Steve Weispfennig officiating. Burial took place in the Yankton Cemetery in Yankton with military honors provided by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post. No 791.
John G. Sorensen was born December 5, 1949, in Yankton, South Dakota, to Marben and Helen (Sparks) Sorensen. He grew up in Yankton and graduated from Yankton High School in 1968. He then enlisted into the United States Air Force. During this time, he met Laura Brisbin and they were married on November 20, 1969, in Rupert, Idaho. John served his country during the Vietnam War and worked as an electronics specialist and repaired the radar for the aircraft. Following the war, he was stationed in Germany for 5 years and then Las Vegas. They moved to Yankton in 1980 and John worked at Montgomery Ward for a few years and then for the United States Post Office, first as a letter carrier and then became the maintenance manager until his retirement in 2009.
John was a very intelligent, hardworking man. He was fascinated with geology, collecting rocks and space. He enjoyed fishing and could do just about anything, including building their home in Yankton.
Survivors include his wife, Laura Sorensen of Yankton; three sons: Mar Sorensen of Yankton; Thor Sorensen of Yankton and Shay Sorensen of Sioux Falls; three grandchildren: Rease, Veronica and Jessica; two great grandchildren: Alou and Autumn and two sisters: Linda and Susan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marben and Helen Sorensen.
