Hundreds of South Dakotans are running for Legislature. Here's the list
General election is Nov. 5, early voting starts Sept. 20
Nearly 40 seats across the South Dakota state Legislature will be contested during the November general election.
After a primary that saw domination by the state’s more hardline conservative faction, Republicans will unite to maintain their supermajority in Pierre when they face a hodgepodge of Democrats, Independents, and Libertarians later this year.
Positions in both chambers come with two-year terms.
For House races, two candidates are sent to the Legislature from each district, while one senator is elected from each district.
House contests with more than two candidates of the same party will trigger a primary race. Senate races with two or more candidates of the same party are also subjected to the primary nomination process.
Though several candidates are currently unopposed in their district’s election, third-party candidates and Independents have until April 30 to file candidacies.
