Gov. Kristi Noem signs off on Watertown murderer's commutation request
Renee Eckes sentenced to life for murder committed at age 19
One of the two women involved in the murder of a Watertown man more than 25 years ago has received approval for a commutation of her life sentence from Gov. Kristi Noem.
Renee Eckes, 43, who appeared before the state’s Pardons and Paroles Board in July, is set to be released from the South Dakota Women’s Prison in Pierre in late 2026 or 2027.
During the board's monthly meeting in Sioux Falls, Eckes expressed that she is not the same young woman who killed David Bauman during a failed home robbery in 1998.
