Former tribal president sentenced to prison for embezzlement
Oglala Sioux President Julian Bear Runner gambled tribal money at casino
A federal judge has ordered the former president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe to serve 22 months in prison for stealing from the tribe he once oversaw.
Judge Linda Reade sentenced Julian Bear Runner for his conviction for wire fraud, larceny, embezzlement and theft from an Indian Tribal Organization on Thursday. Reade sentenced Bear Runner to 22 months on each count, allowing him to serve the time concurrently.
Following his release from federal prison, Bear Runner, 39, will serve three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay $82,483.71 in restitution to the tribe.
