Federal officeholders could be barred from using campaign funds in state races
Should it become law, Dusty Johnson, Mike Rounds couldn't use federal dollars to run for state office
PIERRE – A measure that would hobble Rep. Dusty Johnson and Sen. Mike Rounds from running for state office is on its way through the South Dakota Legislature.
The Senate State Affairs Committee voted unanimously to bar money raised in federal races from being transferred to state races. It’s been a longtime practice to allow federal dollars to be used in state races, though it’s been a path rarely used.
Former Gov. Kristi Noem used millions of dollars she raised while in Congress to win the GOP nomination for governor in 2018.
