Educator, minister, jokester: Sister Virginia Hallauer celebrates 100 years
79th year of ministry marks a lifetime of faith for sister who taught in Jefferson, Bridgewater, Dell Rapids, Willmar, Mitchell, Madison, Aberdeen and Watertown

If there’s anything Sister Virginia Hallauer wanted her elementary students to learn, it was the importance of being honest.
“And to obey and do what they’re told,” she said. “I always thought it was important.”
Hallauer joined the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary when she was 21. At the time, the sisterhood had 262 women ministering, mostly in eastern South Dakota, though also in Minnesota and Montana. Hallauer entered the convent with 15 others in 1946.
Today, there are only 35 Presentation Sisters.
