Deputy turned thief pleads guilty to embezzling police union funds

A former Lincoln County sheriff’s deputy faces up to five years in prison after admitting to stealing from his police union.
South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley’s office announced Thursday that Matthew Wilson of Sioux Falls has pleaded guilty to one count of grand theft for embezzling funds from the Lincoln County Fraternal Order of Police Union.
The theft amounted to about $5,000 and occurred between July and September of last year.
The 39-year-old former FOP treasurer entered the plea Tuesday in Lincoln County Circuit Court. He will be sentenced on March 25 and could receive up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) investigated the case, and the Attorney General’s Office prosecuted it.
