Crime, public safety driving Minnehaha County property tax opt outs
County forecast calls for opt outs in the next several years
Surging public safety costs and the end of federal government Covid funding in the next couple of years will likely lead to a series of property tax opt outs in Minnehaha County.
The County Commission will consider the first of those opt outs for next year’s budget. Valued at $1.5 million, the opt out would be levied in 2025.
In addition, the commission will be asked to take another $1.5 million next year from a 2019 opt out that was never fully levied. The money is expected to help fill a $168 million budget.
