Big schools may face regional test before One-Act Play Festival
Judges at state competition overwhelmed by number of entrants
PIERRE — The South Dakota High School Activities Association board of directors found themselves in unfamiliar territory on April 24, trying to find a way to cut down on the number of students participating in a state event.
At issue was the three-day One-Act Play Festival which has gotten unwieldily due to the participation of so many large schools. SDHSAA Assistant Executive Director Brooks Bowman explained that having 20 large schools participating in the festival puts too much pressure on the judges.
In the past, all the large schools in Class AA automatically went to the play competition. Smaller schools in Class A and Class B must win in regional competitions in order to go to the festival.
