Ballot proposal portends rumblings of a property tax revolt
Sioux Falls man takes steps to put skyrocketing tax bills on 2026 ballot
Voters have yet to weigh in on the 2024 election. But look out, because here comes 2026.
Attorney General Marty Jackley’s office released an explanation of a proposed ballot measure that would cap property taxes. While the 2026 election is still a long way off – including two legislative sessions – property taxes have been a growing complaint for both voters and lawmakers.
And with South Dakota voters no stranger to direct democracy – seven measures are on this year’s ballot – it isn’t surprising to see a move to rein in surging property tax bills. The measure the AG’s office offered an explanation on is sponsored by Joe Hurley of Sioux Falls. Hurley could not immediately be reached.
