As Trump’s budget ax hits South Dakota, Rhoden says it’s worth the pain
Governor warns of more cuts, maintains support for federal spending reforms despite local disruptions
South Dakota’s governor is standing by President Donald Trump’s decision to slash federal spending, even if it means economic and social disruptions at home.
Gov. Larry Rhoden this week acknowledged the strains that national budget reductions are placing on a state government that relies heavily on federal resources, as well as non-government entities, nonprofits and businesses operating outside of the public sector. However, in an email Tuesday alerting high-ranking state legislators that federal cuts are beginning to be felt in South Dakota, he maintained his support for the president’s sweeping government efficiency reforms being led by Elon Musk, a billionaire entrepreneur who’s become a top adviser to Trump.
