All charges in cases against perpetual Sioux Falls mayoral candidate dismissed
Allegations against David Zokaites included assault, protection order violation
The Minnehaha County State’s Attorney office has dropped all charges against former mayoral candidate David Zokaites in two separate cases.
In a letter to the court written in late May, Deputy State’s Attorney Colleen Moran said that an aggravated domestic assault charge and a separate charge for interfering with emergency communication were dismissed without prejudiced, according to Sioux Falls Live.

Zokaites, a three-time candidate for public office in Sioux Falls, was accused of strangling a woman and then stopping her from calling the police. Court records show that the Sioux Falls man never entered into a plea deal.
Additionally, a separate criminal case against Zokaites was also dismissed. On July 30, a charge of violating a protection order was dismissed. He had pleaded not guilty to that charge in May.
A frequent flier in the Sioux Falls local government community known for his zany approach, Zokaites has run for mayor twice. His most recent run for political office came in April when he was defeated in a bid for a seat on the city council.
Zokaites did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday evening.
